What to do after a tornado
Take recovery one decision at a time
When a tornado damages your home or community, begin with personal safety. Then document what happened, contact your insurer and protect your property from additional damage when it is safe to do so.
Make sure everyone is safe
Check on people and pets. Provide basic first aid only when it is safe, and report downed lines, gas odors and other hazards to the appropriate emergency service.
Document damage and contact insurance
Photograph affected areas before cleanup, keep receipts and save samples of damaged materials when safe and practical. Consult your insurer before signing major repair agreements.
Keep recovery records together
Save claim numbers, settlement or denial letters, estimates, cleanup invoices, temporary-housing costs and receipts for emergency purchases. Use official government channels for disaster assistance.
Avoid post-storm contractor scams
Verify identity, insurance and required credentials. Get a written scope and estimate, read the contract and avoid pressure, unexplained cash payments, gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfers.
